Band-saw Your Own Veneers, A Small End-Table • One-on-one Woodworking instruction with nationally renowned fine Woodworker David Finck. Veneering done right provides a powerful method for stretching valuable and unique materials, creating stable surfaces and opening up design possibilities not possible in solid wood, without compromising quality.  “Done right” are the key words here as most people are familiar with low-quality veneered furniture, or even costly veneered furniture suffering from chipping and other defects.  The veneers you will be cutting on the band-saw are nearly 4 times thicker than standard commercial veneers and are simply not susceptible to the problems traditionally associated with veneers.  Furthermore, for the woodworker, rather than working with fussy paper-thin materials, we can plane and join and work with surfaces made from our own shop-made veneers in a similar manner to solid wood – much more enjoyable! You’ll build a simple end-table with a veneered top and a base made of solid wood skirts mortised into straight-tapered solid legs, approximately 20” x 18” x 14”. These two boxes represent my fifteen minutes of fame, though ironically, my contribution to the Warner Bros. movie of 2008, Nights in Rodanthe, went uncredited, so I guess it doesn't count. Nevertheless, the experience was a unique one. I received a call from the property manager of the movie asking if I could design and build two boxes for the movie as well as supply some props and do some coaching. The movie is based on a book of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. I won't summarize the plot, but the leading lady in the movie, Diane Lane, plays a character who was a bit of a woodworker in the past and a pair of boxes play a significant role in the plot. So I did the boxes and set up a sequence so she could appear to make one of the boxes in the movie. I also supplied some tools and coached Ms. Lane in a few aspects of dovetail joinery. The movie has struck some folks rather deeply and they've managed to track me down to commission replicas for meaningful gifts. Taking nothing away from Ms. Lane or Mr. Gere, but, is there an Oscar for "Best Performance by a Box"? Note: I became allergic to cypress while making the originals so reproductions are done in other woods. The basic concept remains the same, and of course, each box will be entirely unique."My work is about quality, careful attention to detail, functionality, and permanence. I think of it as an ongoing attempt to capture the essential core of the beautiful and bring that into people’s homes and lives. I find great pleasure in the process of woodworking. That love of fine craftsmanship often plays a major role in animating my finished products.”These two boxes represent my fifteen minutes of fame, though ironically, my contribution to the Warner Bros. movie of 2008, Nights in Rodanthe, went uncredited, so I guess it doesn't count. Over the years, stretching back to 1984, I have designed and built a wide variety of one-of-a-kind objects ranging from desks, tables, chairs and rockers, to showcases, jewelry boxes and lighting fixtures.Especially significant to me are the liturgical works and the steel-string and classical guitars I've made. Adding the spiritual or musical dimension truly enlarges the scope of this work

Most of us have an awareness of the effects over-consumption and our "throw-away society" have on our environment and our state of mind, yet our manufactured world is increasingly filled with objects that are temporary, superficially attractive, and lacking in human warmth. The things in our homes are among the most intimate part of our external world. They influence us for better or worse, while portraying some essence of who we are and who we wish to become

Making and Mastering Wood Planes • The Book
Making and Mastering Wood Planes • The Book

Making and Mastering Wood Planes is in its fourth printing and now  available on video too!  See the trailer here. While either format will get you to a finished, functioning plane, the two taken together gives you the most thorough coverage of the topic. The book works great as a bench-top reference and self-paced instructional guide and includes many fundamentals of fine woodworking as well. The video pulls it all together and presents information and nuance that truly only comes across in moving pictures.

I decided to write "Making and Mastering Wood Planes" after teaching dozens of workshops on the topic at craft centers and schools across the country over many years. It was the pure delight expressed by so many students at having the simple, yet subtle mysteries of the hand plane uncovered that inspired me.

I was introduced to wooden hand-planes many years ago as a student of the craftsman so often associated with this particular style of hand-plane, James Krenov. He was also kind enough to provide a forward for the book. Students of mine had suggested on many occasions that a book was needed on the topic that would appeal to novice and experienced woodworkers. Indeed, building your own hand-plane is not just and end to acquiring a great hand tool, but also serves as an elegant framework for learning many fundamentals of fine woodworking.

Three years in the making, with very detailed text and hundreds of photos and drawings, I think you will find that "Making and Mastering Wood Planes" will ably and assuredly guide you through the process while helping to elevate your skills to the next level.
